Mount Crawford & Nichols Hut – Day 58.

Up, up and more up,

Today started with an insane climb through the jungle after crossing another impressive jungle bridge on this trail.  This is one of the small leisure’s of this area, awesome swing or sway or suspension bridges (or whatever they are called). The climb was dreadfully slow and the weather deteriorated as the elevation increased. When I made it out of the tree line the weather was most certainly ON. In the clouds and wind and rain. This was NOT the type of fun that I ordered.

Yesterday evening at YTYY hut, another family arrived and we started talking about the various types of “fun” one can have.  Type 1: Fun now, and fun when looking back a year from now.  Type 2: Not fun now, but fun when looking back a year from now.  Type 3: Not fun now, and not fun when looking back a year from now.  This family was deciding what kind of “fun” they had while doing someone else a favour, spreading the ashes of family members and family pets on a specific part of the trail, leading up to YTYY.  It was such a thoughtful gesture, but they where contemplating the creation of a Type 4 category “fun”.  Interesting feelings and emotions and an even more interesting family… including Mia their dog.
Anyway, caught up with Ellen (back alone by herself after her family turned around at YTYY hut), and we stuck together for safety concerns, crossing the peaks one by one.  First it was Shoulder Knob (1300masl), them Junction Knob (1350masl) followed by Mount Crawford (1460masl) until we got to Nichols Hut. Cold, drenched, hungry and tired… and come to think of it, this has not been my darkest TA day on the trail. Type 2 fun?
Enough said, the hut is small and packed to capacity with Southbound TA walkers. It will be another busy night and a looong day tomorrow,  so I should try and get some rest.  Earlier today, during a brief moment the weather gave us a break and we could admire and get a glimpse of where we really are… appreciate the location.
