After a busy evening yesterday, I am taking a day “off”,
Yes, after getting the Haaikie fed, a hot shower, getting the laundry clean and dry, collecting my supply box, setting up camp and charging devices… yesterday was actually a long day. It didn’t took long for me to fall asleep either and I slept for long stints at a time. This morning I couldn’t sleep in either because I have to break camp and take the bus back into town. (Thankfully it is Monday and normal service has resumed). Below are some pictures I took yesterday, using the public elevator and the well lit tunnel leading to it.
I was heading into town to purchase some more snacks and then the InterCity bus to Raetihi. To cut a long story short, the next part of the trail is canoeing DOWN the Whanganui River… so I needed to get to the top. This might sound very white privileged, but I think this is the first time I took an intercity bus… ever. This year I am most certainly doing new things.
This is a cute place, but I will get back to it later, about 6 days from now when I am back here after the canoe trip. I caught the bus to Raetihi and met with the tour operator to discuss the final things. It is a dreadfully small place with almost nothing to do… the poor kids.
Tomorrow I am on the river for the next 6 days or so. Might have limited coverage at the start but will try to update.

He-lo Cliff..
Thank Yous for the info!
Now I know a little more..
Hopefully I can visit to see more of these sculptures.
As for the link, I have actually read up on all the Greenstone after I received my precious Greenstone gift which you got to see when I met you “-)
The interesting thing is that I did not know the art sculptures relates to the Greenstone Sculptures” -)
Please kindly whatsapp a picture of the Sculpture there by you if you are able “-)
Philip, you made me stop and think. I don’t think I have ever stepped on a bus in Christchurch in the 20 years we have been here! I have either walked, cycled, run or used my car. That’s nearly interesting!
Urvi, the sort of art sculpture you see in Philip’s photo are scattered everywhere in New Zealand with some in very obscure places like the forest behind where we live. I can’t help but wonder how they transported the one I’m thinking of to where it is. It’s made of stone, about four feet tall and on the side of a small/narrow walking track. They all have a truly spiritual meaning and feeling, so well worth pausing and being ‘at one’ with them.
I think the carving in Philip’s photo (HEI MATAU/FISH HOOK) means; “give you strength, prosperity, and peace/harmony. It also chants great luck and safe journeys out in the open ocean”. (how appropriate) Cut and paste this for more info.

Stop and think… I should try that sometime LOL.
Dit klink na n groot uitdaging. Sterkte daar. Huur jy n boot?
Dit sal seker ‘n uitdaging wees, maar weet nie hoe groot nie. Jip, ek huur ‘n “boot”… (<-Dink die woord is te impressive vir wat ek het.)
Happy to read you got some good sleep and all that ‘-)
That tunnel looks like the inside of an igloo ‘-)
Love the last pic with the art sculpture, etc ‘-)
canoeing for 6 days – Wow – that is going to be something!
All the best with that! “-)
The lights in the tunnel actually change colours… very beautifully done. I would have done the same and be proud of the outcome.
Thanks for the well wishes.
