Back in between the rivers,

Thanks to a dear friend I was back in Arthur’s Pass this morning just after 10am.  The starting point today was where I left off in Dec 2021 and it felt special being back here, continuing on the trail that I started so long ago.  The vegetation has changed dramatically from where I left the Rangitata 10 days ago, with the fields of tussock transformed into forests now.  Still, the weather looks fine on this side of the divide and I am excited to be back on the TA.

The day started with crossing the Bealey River and then followed by multiple crossings of the Mingha River before the track left the riverbed and entered the forest.
Once in the forest, the beauty and the birdlife did not disappoint.  I stopped for a short break and a little South Island Robin was very interested to see what turns up under the leaves that my shoes turn over.  It was so tame and inquisitive, I actually had time to get my phone out and get a decent photo.

This track is part of the Coast to Coast race every year, so it was not too hard to follow, and in some places it even has a boardwalk.  You also get to climb a couple of slopes that gives you a glimpse of the forest from above.
I didn’t have too much to cover today, only 11-ish km, but I am trying to be quick to get to Goat Pass Hut before the predicted rain comes in.  The day started off windy with a weak cold front to pass over here during the night.  Luckily the river crossings became less and easier, to help me keep up my good time.
I made it to the hut, just in time, maybe 30min before the rain set in. It was and still is very cold, but luckily I had a Sheffield pie to help the Haaikie out in the boiler room.  Looks like I am alone in the hut tonight, with the intentions book showing less and less entries over the last two weeks.  Hopefully there is not too much rain, and I can carry on tomorrow…
