Inland Bush Track – Day 6

A small piece and some rest,

After yesterday, my body was asking for a little break today.  I decided to do a small section of Te Araroa, followed by an extra kilometer to get me to an overnight hot shower and a warm bed.

Just 10km of Te Araroa today consisting of a little road walking and then over the hill. Through some pine forests and into Scott’s Gap all while under some Southland fine weather.
I admire the hard-core TA walkers, doing one stage after the next, cracking on just to get to the next hut to cook, sleep, but this was never my vision.  I want to stop along the way and truly experience NZ, the places, people and beauty it has to offer.  I found this incredible place today, hot shower, comfy bed and even electricity.  You might laugh but you quickly get to appreciate the small things that everyday life forgets (like electricity) .
I could do my laundry, dry my tent, repack my bag, update the website and catch-up on my thoughts… all from the front step of my accommodation with this view.
Sure, you might think, its a house and some farmland with sheep, but to me it was a day at the office. I felt like the king of the world, carving my piece of biltong while watching the sheep go by.  And killing the occasional sandfly.
Thanks to ordinary New Zealanders, I had an awesome day.

  1. Beautiful photos Phil,
Glad to see you have taken it a little easier for a day. I can imagine you on that step, smiling and enjoying the rural atmosphere. Take care 🙂

    • Thanks Robyn. Yes, felt pretty good sitting on that step yesterday. Glad you are enjoying the photos. I hope your project “at home” is coming along as well.
