Leaving the Tararua’s behind,
Woke up this morning after a night of absolutely insane weather. High winds, rain and it just kept on coming in waves. A little bit of me knew this was coming, so I was prepared, making it to a shelter for last night and I am glad that I did. This morning, everyone that spent the night outside was in the shelter… wet and cold, some lost their tents and everyone was trying to gauge what the weather was going to do. Me, well, I stayed.
By around 10am everyone was gone, even the family of 6. The weather was still improving with the rain stopping at least but the wind was still howling and having to tent tonight, I was giving it more time, at least until noon.
I had lots of time to think this morning… and also on this trip, so I have decided that I am starting some lists again… what my new job should look like, what I want to permanently change in my life and other things I want to accomplish (dare I say “before I die”). I know it might sound scary, but I fear if it is not on a list, it will not get done.
I struggled to find my rhythm on this stint of the TA, but I think I am getting there. I struggle to focus the hamster in my head… but I think that I am starting to achieve that as well so I might as well start to pay the other animals in my zoo some attention too.
Side note: This shelter is weird. They could have made it a hut, but they didn’t… it has a curtain for a door which brings to bare a whole host of interesting problems. Wood beetles, spiders, sand flies, and not to mention the weather and wind and birds and noise… and kids cannot work this thing.
Rant over… I hit the trail, finally, by 12:15 pm with the rain most certainly gone and the wind showing signs of diminishing. “Easy” gravel road kilometers that I chewed up remarkably quickly before joining a bike track down hill, closer to the trail end. The cool and overcast conditions were actually good for walking, and I enjoyed ticking off another couple of kilometres… getting closer to Palmerston North.
Camping at Kahuterawa Reserve tonight, about 20km outside of town, before my final stint into Palmerston North tomorrow. The Haaikie is looking forward to some “real” (<-in his mind) food and wanted me to push on today, but the hamster said no, looking after my feet and knowing what is coming before Whanganui.

Weather conditions seems to be very up and down at the moment – eish ..
Perhaps it is the -“Wood beetles, spiders, sand flies, and not to mention the weather and wind and birds and noise… and kids cannot work this thing” – that made you struggle to get your rhythm back today ..
Make your lists – you like doing that and then maybe just maybe less worrying for you ..
You need to keep all your animals in the Zoo in tact – they all work together 😉
Some stunning foudies again
I love the pic with the statues – it is now a screensaver ‘-)
Ugh, my animals in the zoo… so over them.
