Yep, I wanted to write this post in Afrikaans, but decided it would exclude too many of you,
Like you can see in the title, I struggle to translate my thoughts and feelings from Afrikaans into English. To a certain degree the hamster in my head is still processing everything in my home language, and I don’t know if that will ever change. Interestingly enough, I always worked in English, at majority English companies for my entire “career” but always came home to an Afrikaans dinner at night. I good friend once said to me: “When you talk in your sleep I know if it is work (because you speak English) or about something personal, when you speak in Afrikaans.
To get to today’s point, I was invited to a Saturday evening dinner/party/celebration/get-together with some friends. It turned out that everyone at the event were Afrikaans speaking and it simply changed the complete feel and atmosphere of the night. Being able to have a drink, good food and speak my mind in my mother tongue with likeminded people is ultimately priceless. Thank you C&C for putting everything together and cooking. (The Haaikie really enjoyed it) Thanks to your other guests too, it was awesome to just hang out.
Some of you might have also noticed (or be reminded by Facebook) that today use to be the birthday of a very special person in my life. I did not forget, I promise. It is, and will always be a special day, but I find that most people wake up to the day in other time zones – that technically drags the special day into the 19th of May here in New Zealand. Trying to not let the day consume my life, I rather celebrate the day on the 19th here in NZ to include all the emotions and messages from other people into one.
