Last day of the week, time to make it count.

Today was earmarked to work on the cooling, ventilation and interior heater system of the car,

Dad started by draining the water/coolant before looking at the condition of the water hoses and getting to the thermostat.  There were obviously some spots of rust here and there with the thermostat housing being the main culprit, but nothing we could not take care of.

I worked on removing the main, interior, ventilation and heater box from underneath the dash.  Getting things out and open to inspect, lubricate and clean.  Our biggest nemesis, TIME, has also paid a visit to the components here, realising that all the sponges used to “seal” flaps and stuff have turned into dust.  Lots of cleaning had to be done including a couple of small spray jobs to complete as well.  I ended up very “deflated” having to hunt down (what seems like) simple things like sponge in a small town like Ceres… and then the appropriate glue… and and and.  Trying to stay positive and grateful.  The inspection/build date on the heater box is 31 July 1971 and not many things with that date is still in existence today.  If I think about it, not many cars of today will be in a running condition 50 years from now.

The day were filled with other setbacks too.  We finished assembling the windscreen washer system only to discover the pump membranes are leaking and damaged.  (I ordered parts)  It looks like our leak from the master brake cylinder is back (or continuing), with a single drop on the floor this morning too.  Dad finished up the installation of the reverse light switch cable from the gearbox, but we still need to find another way to get to the actual switch… perhaps from the inside.  I disconnected the horn-switch-ring-thing in the steering wheel, but our problem is not completely solved as well.  I will most likely need to remove the steering wheel next week.  Ugh, overall a day with NOT a lot of “completes”…

  1. This really emphasises just how dedicated that classic car enthusiasts must be, and you have very much jumped in at the deep end with no prior experience. Kia kaha brother.
