Mavora Lakes and Carey’s Hut – Day 14

A long day,

Pushing on a little today, trying to get ahead of some bad weather.  Back into the forest today after a night at Kiwi Burn Hut, most certainly one of the better looking huts I have been to in recent weeks. Love the windows, I could live here and just stare out at the view all day.
Overall a nice track, being part of the Mavora Lakes tracks, it gets a little more attention from DOC (Department of Conservation). There is tree-fall in places, but that is almost present everywhere in NZ after the high winds we had earlier in the season. Also there are more bridges here in place if the river is high, like this one over the river I had to walk through yesterday.
The river is clear, beautiful, rough and roarry in certain places followed by calm and quiet in other sections, where you almost cannot tell if it is a lake or a river.
Reached the Southern Mavora Lake, and crossed the swing bridge just to take a timeout and get some photo’s. Not many people on the track, a couple of TA south bound walkers, a fishermen or two and the odd daypack walker. Beautiful weather…
Soon after, I got to the Northern Mavora Lake and camp ground. The original plan was to camp here, but feeling good and the weather is great, so I am pushing on to Carey’s Hut for the night. Only 10km to go to finish a 30 kilometer day on mostly 4WD track, with unfortunate mud pools in between.
