Yes, I get to meet my old boss in Christchurch, today,

Like I said in a previous post: My landscaping project continues. FP-117, How often do you get to meet the boss of your first real, fulltime job, again after almost 20 years?

Well, back in 2005, I started working fulltime at a radio station in Cape Town, after finishing a year of volunteering there earlier in 2002 (I think).  I was “technical manager” but I was also the only technical person there, so hence the “manager” in my title.  Looking back, it was also my first job where I managed things, rather than people… something I am good at up to this day.  Over the next couple of years I kept very very loose contact with Anna (my boss back then) and a couple of weeks ago I sent her a copy of a photograph from the “good-old-days” after I was (and still is) sorting out some of my data.  In a strange way of luck and coincidence, she messaged me back and said they will be in Christchurch at the end of May this year, visiting some friends.  Long story short… I am excited and looking forward to meeting her and her husband at the end of this month.  I have so much to say, and ask and catchup on… almost considered making a list, LOL.”

Today was that day, and to say the least, it did not disappoint.  Anna and her husband are such awesome, considerate and kind people and I felt instantly welcome back in their company.  Between the both of them, they impacted the lives of so many people and I would like to include mine as one of them.  I had to say thank you and thank you and thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to grow at the station.  It was the start of my career and I would not have been where I am today if it was not for them and the station.  Two key attributes about me: Being resourceful and performing well under pressure, are all thanks to my first job.

We had coffee together, catching each other up on what has happened over the last couple of years followed by dinner at their friend’s house later in the evening.  I made sure to leave them with little Makana treats to remember New Zealand by and thanked the hosts with flowers.  Awesome memories of the good-old-days.

    • Dit was nogal. En remarkable hoe tuis ek gevoel het in ons conversation. Miskine is dit net omdat hulle sulke awesome mense is.

Still, it was great to see them, and have the opportunity to say thank you.
