Working on the doors and under the hood,

After driving around with dad to a couple of places this morning, looking for brake pads mostly, I started on the doors today.  Opening each of them, by removing the interior lock mechanisms, window winder handles and door panels, making sure not to damage anything or break any clips.  I need to get inside the doors to remove the locks and window winder “thingies”.  (trying not to sound too technical – LOL)  They all came out today for cleaning, inspection and re-greasing after the old grease and lubrication got tacky/sticky.  Most of the doors were hard to open or close and winding the windows up and down were tough, like you might break something while doing it.

Dad worked on the carburettor and ignition system.  Removing the Motorola electronic ignition system that he fitted years ago, in an attempt to improve the fuel efficiency.  He installed the original Ford ignition coil on top of the engine (that he kept from “years ago”) too and installed new parts in the distributor.  Sorry for those not in “the know” of cars and stuff, but I am getting a little technical.  He still wants to make adjustments to the carburettor after the test drive of yesterday as well, fiddling with the automatic choke and setting the fuel/air mixture.  We left this for another day, once the new thermostat is installed and the car is running again.  He lubricated the accelerator cable as well, so that the pedal seemed more responsive and the return springs were more effective.

Dad and I also removed, lubricated and refitted the speedo cable between the gearbox and the speedometer in the console.  While doing this we discovered the reverse indicator switch wiring needed some work as well.  We managed to updated most of it… just need to fix an additional mounting at the bottom body of the car.  (waiting for glue to dry)  The repair of this car is turning more and more into a journey and not an easy fix.  Everything takes a little longer to complete and the job is a “little” bigger than expected.  I am glad I came for 6 weeks.
