Tenting in Pipiriki – Day 74.

Day three on the river (followed by an unknown emotion I guess),
And the first thing I checked this morning when I opened my eyes through the glass window in the door was the state of the wind. I didn’t like seeing the palms outside bending over in the wind, just like they did yesterday evening.
The prediction suggested that the wind should drop overnight but clearly the wind didn’t listen. Ugh, time to get up, make an early start and be off. The sooner the better…
Today there was set to be a couple of “interesting” rapids to navigate on the river. One of them has a large boulder in the middle (that should obviously be avioded) and the other one was called 50-50… based on your chances of making it through without drinking some water. Well, for obvious reasons my phone was stashed deep away in a dry bag, so not much photographs sorry.
I can report that I made it through all the rapids today without getting wet. Betty did well on her part, helping me steer the front. There were a couple more rapids in close succession just before I reached Pipiriki soon after 1pm. I made good progress and my original plan was to push on to the next campsite, but the wind and pending rain in that direction didn’t make it look attractive at all. So, I decided to stay here for the night… hot shower, WiFi and fish & chips for dinner. Yummy (even though it is technically cannibalism in the Haaikie’s part).
Felt good to be clean and could get an update on the weather for the next three days. Not looking too flashy at all to be honest.
Speaking about the Monster yesterday… He really got me in trouble tonight when I politely tried to ask two gentlemen to be considerate towards other people in shared spaces. Ugh, made me feel so bad afterwards… maybe I should just avoid other people, public spaces and huts. The trail makes me nervous around all of them.

  1. Even though your phone was stashed safely..
    More than enough stunning pics!

    You weather up e down..

Thank you Betty for taking care of Phil!

Fish e Chips and the Cannibalism on Haaikie’s part.. LOL

    Monster vs Politely..
    Does not match..
I say again.. there is no “Monster” in You”-(

    • I tried to catch a photograph here and there, when the river was quiet or when I took a break to feed the Haaikie.
Yes, the Monster does not do politely… hence I used the word “tried”. It didn’t go well at all.
But that is over now, looking to the future. Will work on the monster another day.
