The King’s Birthday.

It is a public holiday in NZ today called the “King’s Birthday”,

It is not really his birthday, but like Wikipedia states: “The King’s Official Birthday is the selected day in most Commonwealth realms on which the birthday of the monarch is officially celebrated in those countries. It does not necessarily correspond to the date of the monarch’s actual birth.”  Having grown up in the Republic of South Africa, I sometimes forget that New Zealand, although an independent Commonwealth country, still has a Monarchy and King Charles III as the “Head of State”.  It gets a little fuzzy for me, but that is how I understand it and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. (I hope I got the capital letters in the right places too)  The bottom-line, I didn’t have to go to work today, like most of the rest of the nation :-).

What still strikes me, while I am working towards becoming a New Zealand citizen, is that I will have to make my oath or affirmation at a citizenship ceremony as well.  “I [say your name] affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles the Third, King of New Zealand, his heirs and successors according to law, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of New Zealand and fulfil my duties as a New Zealand citizen.”  There are some pretty big words in there, not to be taken lightly and something to think about before affirming.  …  Luckily I still have three years left to figure it all out.

On a different note, maintaining strong progress with my meditation work today.  Feels like I am getting in the habit of things now, except for struggling to meditate on weekends.  Not sure why this is the case, always finding a 100 different reason NOT to do it on the weekend.

  1. Now that I have retired, I’m no longer sure when it’s the weekend.
It felt like Sunday today even though it’s Monday, so maybe that’s the stage you need to reach, when you don’t have a regular working schedule.

    • Certainly a “first world” problem to have. Well if not knowing what day it is, is the measuring stick, I am definitely there.
