Walking to Nina Hut.

Just a little short walk to get things ready for the TA,

Started the day early to meetup with some other friends before leaving Christchurch, driving north towards Lewis Pass.  The weather here in Christchurch did not look too bad, but I am sure it will change for the worst as we “round the corner” towards Lewis Pass and the west coast.  I am glad that “Dino” (my ute) also got to go on a trip out to the mountains after standing in the garage for just about 3 months.  We waited at the start of the trail, in light drizzle, for more people to arrive and I was very surprised when an old work colleague from Leopard and her friend also parked up next to us.  It was great to see some more familiar faces and delighted to see this special, what I consider, old friend.

With packs on our backs and poles in hand, we crossed the first swing bridge and started the trail.  It has been raining for the last day or two plus it was raining today, so I expected the trail in the forest to be pretty boggy for most of the way and it did not disappoint.  To me this was all normal but I get the feeling that some elements of our party was a little, shall I say disappointed at this fact.  I was just glad that we did not have to cross any large rivers without bridges today…

Spent most of the walk in the forest with the rain coming and going at times.  The going was not too tough or too slow and we made a stop or two, admiring the view and taking in the scenery, where we were standing.  The small streams on the path were all swollen and in flowing strong, but we managed to cross them all with some fancy footwork.
We were getting close to the hut when it looked like a large group of walkers were going to overtake us, but Mia was having non of it and “bolted” ahead.  She put on a brave stint towards the end to ensure we did not sleep outside in the rain for the night.  Thanks Mia.  Also the group of guys were pretty friendly and some of them slept on the floor so that we could all get a place in the dry to sleep.  I tried to get the fire started to warm things up, but C ultimately succeeded in keeping it going, making the place nice and cosy, enabling our clothes to dry.  All in all a great day and we ended it with great conversation.

    • A little more than just fancy footwork required at times… but it was what I expected.
Yes, Mia did a great job in saving the day. We where all prepared to sleep outside, but glad we didn’t have to.
